Armchair BEA: Why, Hello There.

Allow me to be frank: I am extremely jealous of everyone who is at BEA. I'd do just about anything to get there, but unfortunately when you work for the man, there's this little complication called "vacation time." So the fact that I'll be in Vegas for over a week this August is pretty much bogarting any and all vacation time that I have available. Hence, no BEA for me. But I am definitely making the best of it and am super excited to participate in Armchair BEA and I cannot wait to meet some amazing fellow bloggers.

Anyway, let's get down to business.

Salutations, I'm Jen. I started Makeshift Bookmark last September because I had been stalking blogs since January 2010. Let's face it, I don't have many people with whom I can gush about YA in my preferred manner: unbridled, relentless fangirling. I love reading any type of YA. Paranormal, of course (thanks, Twilight!) but I've also developed a fondness forcontemporary and those YA books that deal with difficult topics. There's just something indescribable about reading a book that really makes you FEEL. Not only that, but it's a bonus if a book can make you feel an insane amount of joy, hurt, or make you cry. Am I a literary masochist? Maybe. But that's how I like my books.

About me personally? I'm just a gal on the wrong side of my 20s who loves to laugh and be laughed at. I'll be married 2 years in August to my husband (affectionately referred to as "Mr. Jen") who is the greatest thing in my life. No kiddos just yet, because I am trying to finish nursing school before I think about anything crazy like that. We do, however, have two feline children, Bo and Bella. Seriously, I love them as if they were my own children. I work full-time as a call center representative and am convinced I speak to the craziest people on earth 40 hours a week.

I love to sing. I love to read, duh. I have THE best family anyone could ask for. I'm seriously ridiculous and will do anything for a laugh. And I can't wait to meet all of you!

  2. Speaking of blog stalking, I've been stalking your blog since Capillya mentioned it somewhere. :D LOL. So now it's probably the right time to introduce myself formally. Hi Jen, I'm Tina. :)

  3. Hi! I'm just getting into YA. At first I thought I'm too old, but then I see people my age reading it, so now I'm trying to see what books are good and stuff. I'm following armchair bea too.:) I don't have a "proper" book blog I've just started writing book reviews on hubpages. I figured since I read a lot I might as well keep track. Nice to meet you!:) Sorry if this was too long.

  4. Salutations, Jen! I think I'm a literary masochist too... some of my favorite books are the hardest ones to read, the ones that haunt you even after you've finished them. However, good thing there are still plenty of happy-go-lucky books out there to save us from complete morbidity/darkness/general-unhappiness! :)

  5. Yep, we've been interacting on Twitter and I'm already a follower of your blog. Just added you on Goodreads though. :P I love books that make you FEEL! I've mentioned that word with the exact same emphasis (although I think I used italics) in my reviews. The most recent is probably for The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta. See you around ArmchairBEA this week. :)

  6. Fabulous intro! First, I have to say, I just adore your blog title -- hilarious, and true! The pictures are adorable. Good luck finishing nursing school (!) and I so feel you on working for a call center -- you probably do speak to the craziest of the crazy! ;)

Looking forward to your posts this week.

  11. LOL - I work at an IT company - I know all about those crazy tech calls!! Good thing you have your books to take your mind off of that!

Maybe next year we will actually be at BEA, instead of wishing we there, too :)

Have a great Armchair BEA week!

  12. I'm an old follower, but I though I'd stop by and say hello. Yay for feline children! I think I've already seen 4 or 5 people mention their cats. There really might be something to that book blogging and cats thing I've seen people talk about, lol.

  14. It took me a long time to get over feeling weird about reading YA now that I'm a full fledged A (yup, I'm on the wrong side of my 20s too).

  15. I'm positive you talk to the craziest people on the planet! I've done that job before and you really do!

On behalf of the Armchair BEA organizers thanks so much for participating! We really are so happy to have you, even if you'd rather be there (I completely understand)!

  16. I'm trying to keep your face busy while it's in NYC! It would be better if you were here, but JSR KISSED YOUR FACE. That has to count for something, right?

  17. Jen, I love your post! No, seriously I do. <3 And I completely agree about books that make you feel. I love getting so attached to characters that I laugh, cry, and hurt when they're going through something. It's great to learn more about you and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your Armchair BEA posts! :D

  18. Nice to meet you Jen. I wish you well through nursing school. I am a nurse for the last almost 15 years, and I think it is a great profession. Of course, it does have a few pits but overall it offers fabulous flexibility and mobility for all kinds of work.

Your blog looks fabulous. I am going to look around a bit more. Have a great week.
