Top Ten Books That Made This Grown Woman Cry

....or feel something equally strong.

Top Ten Tuesday is brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.

1. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
I'm talking 3am, shaking the bed, trying desperately not to wake my husband SOBBING. I've never cried harder at a book before.

2. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
This book caused such a reaction in me that I can really only describe it by this here keysmash: l;sja;O*R :Q OIAj89P A: sfpasd !#? Yep. My mind: blown.

3. House of Night Series by P.C. and Kristen Cast
I hate saying that I hate books, but I really hated these books. Really, I shouldn't even blame the books. I should hate myself for reading up to the 6th book after knowing that I disliked the first one so much. This was back when it was a physical impossibility for me to NOT finish a series. I've learned the error of my ways.

4. The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart
THIS BOOK MADE ME SO FLIPPIN ANGRY. Don't get me wrong, I loved it. But the BACKSTABBING? Ruby O. is one of my favorite protags and for her to be betrayed as she was made me all sorts of homicidal towards some characters in this book. But also? I had that "omg this is something amazing" feeling running through me the entire time I was reading. Hands down one of the best, most consistently GOOD YA series.

5. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

6. Shadow Kiss/Blood Promise by Richelle Mead
Definitely the best in the series. Definitely the most painful and emotional.

7. Jessica Darling Series by Megan McCafferty
No book, to this date, has ever made me laugh out loud more than once. This one? The LOL-count is probably up in the 50s or 60s.

8. Hallowed by Cynthia Hand
SO many tears. SO many emotions.

9. Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr
Again with the tears and the mass amounts of emotions.

10. Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

  1. I am so intrigued by the SUPER STRONG reactions everyone and their mother seems to have with Mara Dyer. I guess I should probably read it to see what the fuss is about...

I basically hated Mockingjay with the fire of a thousand suns and continue to get ridiculously pissed off every time I think about it. I can't even MENTION it without ranting. Gah.

  2. Amen to the House of Night series. I was the same way. I should have had Shift and Darkest Mercy on my list as well!

  3. With Mockingjay, it wasn't until that cat showed up at the end that I lost it.

I really need to keep going with the Wicked Lovely books.

  4. I'm just curious, by what about the House of Night series made you hate it so much?

  5. Yes about House of Night. I finally gave that series up too. I have Shadow Kiss on my list too and agree that those two are the best of the series.
You cried reading Hallowed? I'm very worried now!
I need to read Mara Dyer soon because I've seen that one definitely elicits a response.

  6. YES! Mockingjay was an emotional roller coaster.
I read another really emotional book - Spy Glass directly after. I needed some light-hearted after reading those two!

  7. I had some serious issues with being irked at the end of Mockingjay. Actually, I feel very similarly to Allison up in Comment #1. I want a different Mockingjay, and this time I want it written like it SHOULD be. :D

  8. I'm with you on the Twilight Series--why did she ever write Breaking Dawn *ugh*. I loved the Hunger Games Trilogy, so exciting. kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  9. Great list, Shadow Kiss was SO sad!! And yeah I feel the same way about HoN...I struggled to not finish a series too which is also why I kept reading them, but eventually I did have to call it quits on that one.

    The Cait Files

  10. About House of Night Series by P.C. and Kristen Cast - I am TOTALLY with you!! I've read them all, and came though the middle of Awakened and I just couldn't read anymore. I mean WTF?! Zoey has a goal - she needs to save the world from Nefered and she just decided to stop and stay on the Scotland island with Stark?! What the hell?! Where is the fighting for greater good?! I've never finished it. And also all that stuff with Nefered and noone doing anything about it when it's so obvious she is evil.. I don't know. I didn't like it.

Shadow Kiss - OMG I cried so so hard!! First I was angry with all the Lissa stuff going on. Then I was so so happy about Dimitri and Rose and then in the end. I couldn't belive it!! I just couldn't. I was in a state of shock I coudn't even cry. It hit me after some minutes that all of that was real. And then I started crying.

And also Mockingjay - yeah though all the book it was a bit.. how to say.. weird all that filming and stuff that bothered me a lot, but the end?! I was crying so hard. And couldn't stop thinking about it.

    Nice choice of books!

  11. Oh, my Gosh, I'm trying really hard to breathe. Jen, you make me laugh so much, I never get enough of your posts and writing style.

First, what is it about the Hunger Games that brings the Epic Crier out of people? I must find out. New goal for the end of the year, if not next year.

From what I've gleaned from reviews of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, it seems like potential readers will either love or hate, with no in between feelings. I'm so unsure of which category I'll fall under based on what I've read, that I'm like cowering in the corner away from this book.

House of Night would be my source of "fire-breathing disdain." Not because of the first book in the series. What has me POed is the fact that I've stuck through the ups and downs of this series, only to be deterred from the ninth one after the happenings of book eight. Why have I stuck around so long? No effing clue. But I'm THIS close to say the hell with it and all ensuing books.

Twilight - loved. Vampire Academy - loved... and cried for. Jessica Darling - why haven't I read it already, like yesterday? Hallowed - Why? WHY? WHY WERE YOU SO EMOTIONAL? Could you just reassure me that nothing happens to Tucker?

I need to read the last two of the Wicked Lovely series before I can pound my gavel and pass my final judgement. And I NEED to get to Shift badly! I've been waiting to read it since forever!

    Overall, though, great list xD

    - Asher (from Paranormal Indulgence)

  12. I've been waiting to read Darkest Mercy because I loved Wicked Lovely and then Ink Exchange kind of lost me. Then they kind of got better but I still didn't feel as excited about them. So maybe I need to stop debating and just read it...
I did love the first couple House of Night books, but this is a series that has definitely gone on far too long...

  13. We have a lot of the same tastes in books. I felt the same way about Mockingjay, Blood Promise, Sloppy Firsts, and Shift. They were all incredible reads. I also broke up with the House of Night series last year. It was torture! I had to break up after book five or something. I can't WAIT to read Hallowed...Unearthly is my favorite angel book ever. Great list!

  14. Mockingjay did pack quite a punch. I really want to read Mara Dyer.

  15. I am with you on the Twilight Saga, you couldn't have said it better :)

  16. Eclipse was both horrifying and a letdown. The scene where Bella gives birth made me feel sick, and then the ending just sort of petered out. I wanted an epilogue or something, just to make the series feel like it was complete.

  17. You always make me laugh with your posts! Esp. your summarization of The Twilight Series. I read The Boyfriend List a few summers ago and I actually vaguely remember much about the book, besides a house boat and boys. BUT I just found my copy of the book, So.. perhaps a re-read is required.

  18. Oh my, yes, Mockingjay neutered my soul. NEUTERED. MY. SOUL.

And re: Twilight series - my firebreathing disdain came in the form of NEW MOON. I wanted that girl to jump off the cliff. So. Bad.

  19. I hate House of Night too. Just the thought of them makes me shudder. Your Twilight thoughts are mine too...Ugh..

  20. OMG! This is a great list! I have yet to read any of Lockhart books. But I need to.
