My Thoughts: The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

Published: June 12, 2012

GoodReads Summary: Tough, brainy alchemist Sydney Sage and doe-eyed Moroi princess Jill Dragomir are in hiding at a human boarding school in the sunny, glamorous world of Palm Springs, California. The students--children of the wealthy and powerful--carry on with their lives in blissful ignorance, while Sydney, Jill, Eddie, and Adrian must do everything in their power to keep their secret safe. But with forbidden romances, unexpected spirit bonds, and the threat of Strigoi moving ever closer, hiding the truth is harder than anyone thought.
Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Richelle Mead's breathtaking Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive. In this second book, the drama is hotter, the romances are steamier, and the stakes are even higher.
Being a nurse, I have pretty easy access to heart monitors. Just for fun, I would've liked to watch my EKG strips while reading The Golden Lily. I'd be willing to bet that I experienced a few runs of preventricular contractions. Not to mention any arterial blood gas test would probably show respiratory acidosis from the amount of pCO2 built up. (Sydney would so appreciate this talk.)

Because, you guys? SOMETIMES I DID NOT BREATHE.

Sydney. This girl is so careful and calculating, it kills me. She's SO SQUARE. But I love the heck out of her. I cannot tell you the last time I've been inside the head of such an endearing character. Crippling insecurities and all, Richelle Mead has crafted the anti-Rose, but somehow made her a total boss in her own fashion. She's the Momma Bear to Rose's reckless, "fly by the seat of her pants" mentality. I've said it before, but there is not a single type of character Mead cannot write. Seeing her grow, letting her guard down, and learning to come into her own was such a fantastic experience for me. She rocked those khakis. And I'm pretty sure I read a line where she actually said, "I was going to have to research kissing."

And Adrian. THIS is what I've been waiting for since Adrian's debut in Frostbite. Sure, we got a little preview of Adrian love in Vampire Academy. That was purely means to an end and it broke my heart to see it happen. The Golden Lily opens up a whole new world of Adrian Ivashkov with his pretty, pretty words. PALPITATIONS FOR ALL. His character is so complex and beautiful and tragic. Plus, it's pretty awesome when second-too-long looks and fingertips brushing become the key ingredients for swooning. Because Mead is a boss like that.

I can't even FATHOM how it could get better than this. As far as action and romance go, this rivals Vampire Academy, neck and neck. I don't know how she does it, but she's it she's STILL doing it. Indisputably one of YA's most talented authors, Richelle Mead has once again blown my mind.

And, given her track record with shattering our worlds in The Third Book, we've got a good several months to stock up on Kleenex and Xanax. I suggest investing in the generic form, maybe? Cheaper.

  3. OMG, you are so lucky, I am counting down the days until June 12. Aaaaahh!!! Adrian was my favorite character in the VA series, I hated Rose and Dimitri (there, I said it), so I was thrilled when I read "Richelle Mead has crafted the anti-Rose". Oh, Adrian. Oh, Richelle Mead. Why are you doing this to me??
(looks at calendar, takes deep breaths, looks at calendar. Aaaahhhh!!)

    2. How can u love rose AND Adrian? Rose broke Adrian's heart (I quote: "I loved you, and you destroyed me. You took my heart and ripped it up. You might as well have staked me!") isn't that reason enough to hate her? Jus' sayin'... Oh, and I WANT THE BOOK, CALENDAR!!!

    3. another person loved Adrian,Rose,Dimitri at the same time like Richelle Mead.
I loved Adrian not only because of his funny lines but I believe there is a great chance of Adrian to be a better person in Bloodlines series as RM does amazing character development through the series just like she did with Rose in VA,
in my POV Rose and Dimitri suffered much more than Adrian through out VA.
It was Adrian who didnt stop stalking Rose even if she begged many times to leave her alone and then make her date him when she had no other option that was too in exchange of money.
It was true Rose did not handle the situation well with Adrian but unlike Adrian there was so much on her plate.
Worst of all Adrian blamed Rose for all the misfortune of her friends, but if anyone have a clear mind, they will see be it Sydney,Jill, Eddie, what ever happened to them was simply unfortunate, Rose did not put them there.

So now I am excited for TGL as now Adrian will really fall in love with Sydney unlike Rose which was a challenge to him(reference VA Ultimate Guide RM said it was a challenge to Adrian as Rose did not fall for him instantly)

and I m simply excited to read about Sydrian as I loved how Sydney change Adrian for better in Bloodlines

    4. You got it in one. I'm sick of all the Rose and Dimitri haters. Yes we all love Adrian, myself included but she was meant to be with Dimitri. If she ended up with Adrian the series would have felt unfinished and there would be no Sydrian.

I am ready for the heart daggers of book 3. BUT OMG I JUST WANT TO READ GOLDEN LILY ALREADY! WHINEEEEEE!

  7. You're awesome ! I love your review !!! I'm so obsessed with Richelle Mead's books I ADORE her and I am literally counting the days until TGL's release (51 to be exact) I dream about this book, no kidding !!! I love Sydney she is such a great protagonist and I do agree that RM can write any type of characters she is THAT good. And Adrian ? Ok I loved Dimitri in VA. He was pretty much perfect. But after reading Bloodlines, I think I might like Adrian better *gasp* he's fabulous that boy *sigh* and I want him with Sydney. Ok i don't want any spoilers (well sometimes I kinda do lol but then I remind myself it will be so much better to experience this book's awesomeness on my own :D)but please tell me they share nice moments together...

  8. ADRIAN!! He is my favorite of the VA world and it sounds like I'm in for a doozy with this book and his character. Plus, I love Sydney, too, so I can't wait to see the continuing growth of her character.

Now to find a way to pass the time until I have this little book in my hands...

  12. I am seriously kicking myself right now. I went kind of crazy along with everyone else near Bloodlines release and then I STILL HAVEN'T READ IT. What is wrong with me?!

I think my heart made an interesting dance routine just reading this review <3 Sydney was such a different character from what I'm used to in VA and I SO CALLED her and Adrian from when she saw him in the video or whatever. Speaking of Adrian... <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 I love Dimitri for Rose but Adrian was always my favourite. I can't wait to read a series where he's even more of a prominent character!

1:39 AM... still early enough to read Bloodlines, right? ;)

  13. UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE. I had thought I anticipated this book as much as any human was physically and emotionally capable, but I WAS WRONG. I've totally just topped it IN THIS MOMENT. I feel like a druggie, because I'm not only missing my Mead Fix, because YOOO she is BOSS, but because I need my Vampire Academyish Fix. I miss the characters, I miss not knowing what's happening, those searing glances and those static touches... I just NEED The Golden Lily, okay? THIS REVIEW IS SO UNFAIR, just FYI.

My heart is doing the Palpitation Dance just THINKING about being reunited with ADRIAN, Sydney, and Co.

  14. *resists the urge to keymash*

But really. I am so excited for this book that my hands might literally have been flailing as I read this review. Just a little bit.

I loved (loved, loved, loved) Adrian in the Vampire Academy series and in Bloodlines. I really just love everything Mead writes ever, apparently. But Adrian has an exceptional hold on my heart.

You review has made me pretty much EXPONENTIALLY more excited to read The Golden Lily! Which means that I might physically explode when I actually get it in my hands. This might actually be counterproductive to the desire to read it, though. I might need to look into that.

(Oh! And I love your new layout, by the way!)

  18. I thought reading books like this will be boring or something, but when I started reading and fall in the characters, I realized that I’m starting not just to like it but I fell in love with the book.
